Great books for young programmers ===================================== I certainly read a lot of programming stuff. Over the last two years, I started to build my own personal library of book about computing. Today, I would like to share with you the ones that I found helpful during my quest to become a world-class programmer (of course, I ain't there yet). \#1: C For Dummies, Vol 1 and 2 -- Dan Gookin No, you aren't dreaming. That is really one these For Dummies books. That was the first programming book I ever read, and that is the one that gave me the passion for programming. The best thing about it, is that I got both for 10ยข. I also liked the informal style of the author. The bad thing is, it is rather long -- about 500-pages per volume, the keyword `if` is introduced at page 209 (you get the idea). However, the thing I hate to most about this book is the badly coded examples. For example, many of the examples use libraries specific to the Borland C compiler; while some others beg for a buffer-overflow attack. So, why did I put it on my list? To make you understand that you need to start somewhere. \#1: Structure and Interpretation of Computer Programs -- Harold Abelson and Gerald Jay Sussman \#1: The C programming language -- K&R \#1: ... http://www.librarything.com/catalog/theCore
